Mobile Device Security Best Practices

First Montana Bank strongly recommends that you follow security best practices to protect yourself and your mobile devices from theft, unauthorized use, compromised data, viruses, identity theft and other potential risks. The responsibility for securing your mobile device lies with you, so it is critical that you take steps to ensure safe, enjoyable use of your device. Mobile devices include smart phones, tablets, e-readers and laptop computers. This document outlines common security best practices, but is not all-inclusive, and we encourage you to consult other resources.

Best Practice Recommendations

• Keep your mobile device with you or in a secure location at all times. Do not leave the device unattended, particularly in public places.
• Password protect your mobile device with a strong password and set the device to auto lock after a set number of unsuccessful password attempts - 10 is a common amount. Do not share your password with anyone.
• Report a lost or stolen mobile device used to access First Montana Bank Mobile Banking applications to the bank immediately, so that we can unenroll the device from Mobile Banking. The theft or loss of a mobile device should also be reported to the police, which may assist in its recovery.
• Keep the operating system and other applications updated.
• Enable anti-virus software and a firewall if possible. Encrypt data transmission when possible.
• Do not attempt to change or circumvent default security features (this is known as “jailbreaking" your device).
• Back up the data and settings regularly according to recommendations from the device manufacturer.
• Consider enabling a “remote wipe” feature, if available, that would delete stored data if certain criteria are met.
• Disable wireless access, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, when not in use. If possible, configure the wireless access to require user confirmation to prevent automatic connection with other devices. Keep your wireless connection on “hidden mode” unless you need to be visible to others. If you have questions about these security features, contact your mobile device manufacturer.
• Use caution when installing software on your device. Do not install software from unknown sources. Review application permissions when installing software.
• Store personal data only as necessary to minimize risk that this information could be compromised if your device is lost or stolen.
• Before disposing of your mobile device, ensure that data is wiped or otherwise securely deleted.
